Teaching English in Slovakia

Your Life in Slovakia as an English Teacher

Those looking to escape the heavy tourist traffic of Western Europe venture to Slovakia, where the castles are just as beautiful and the cuisine is just as delicious.  For outdoor enthusiasts, hike or ski one of Slovakia’s many mountains, or venture into one of the country's legendary caves.  At the end of your day, warm up by sipping on some locally made plum brandy.

English teachers in Slovakia typically find work towards the beginning of September or October, and then again in January. Most English teaching contracts in Slavia end in late June.   For those looking to teach through the summer, opportunities at summer English language camps are available in Slovakia and throughout Europe. Summer positions typically start in late June and early July. There are opportunities to interview in advance over the phone and via email, although English teachers should also be prepared to interview in person once they arrive in Slovakia.   English teachers will also be responsible for their airfare, as well as housing.  Most teachers live in apartments recently vacated by previous teachers, and many room with their coworkers.

A solid hourly wage affords English teachers to live a very comfortable life.  Schools typically offer around 20-25 hours per week of work, leaving you plenty of opportunity to travel and explore.  English teachers do not need to have a BA to teach in Slovakia, although it is preferred, and a TEFL certification is absolutely necessary.  Major cities for English teaching jobs include Bratislava, Kosice, Nitra, Bystrica, Banksa, and Presov.
